Our First Annual Royal Palm Yacht Club Boat Show:
Although it was small, by all measures it was a successful event. I want to thank all the members who volunteered to assist, even though, as it turned out, the boat owners with the assistance of the Edison staff did most of the set up work and take down the show. In particular, I want to express my thanks to Bill Perry and John Tuscano for all their work in making our first little show successful.
From talking with the boat owners, they enjoyed the opportunity to show off their boats and are enthusiastically looking forward to a much larger combined event next year. We hope to have three different associations showing their boats next year: the classic boats, classic wooden outboards, and antique glasspar boats. Chris Pendleton, President and CEO of the Edison Museum, and her staff did a great job assisting us and the boat owners and showed us every courtesy. They even helped us get the boats on TV by guiding WINK NEWS and CHANNEL 4 FOX NEWS to the boats. I did not see the WINK NEWS spot, but I did see the FOX NEWS spot on the 10:00 PM news.
It was fascinating meeting and talking to the owners and finding out how some of the boats evolved into the display classics that they are today. Some were found literally as wrecks in barns. One sat in a container for more than thirty years. One was built from scratch as a 1929 replica of a racing boat which had actually raced at the Buffalo Launch Club in 1929 (the Club Vicki belonged to before joining the RPYC). One of the owners and classic boat builder recently completed building an exact replica of a one of a kind 1920’s racing boat for Bill Marriott. The owner of the original boat demanded that the new boat be a precise replica including a World War I aircraft engine. From the first time Bill Marriott saw the original boat to the completion of the replica which spanned decades was quite a story. Each of the owners had a unique, interesting story to tell about his boat.
All of them expressed a desire to be included in our next and future years’ shows.
I had the pleasure of introducing the Boat Show concept to the Club, and I appreciate the opportunity to work with you the members, as well as our RPYC staff and Chris Pendleton and her staff at the Edison. Photos taken by Marv will follow at a later time. Here’s to a greatly expanded future annual event sponsored by both the RPYC and the Edison Ford Museum.
