Our cruise to the Yacht Basin started out with fog Friday morning. After a slight, delay thirteen of fourteen boats were able to make it to the Yacht Basin. Carlos and Marta Perosio who keep their boat at Salty Sam’s and were only able to make it to the Sanibel Bridge before they had to turn back to Salty Sam’s. However, they drove to the Yacht Basin and commuted from their home for the rest of the weekend. In addition to the thirteen boats and twenty seven people we had six Members who joined by commute too. We also had the Nobel’s join us for dinner on Saturday evening. (A total of 33 people were in attendance)
The weekend included a few rain showers, but as luck would have it, the showers did not cause us to miss anything. We had a hospitality table set up by the boats for the weekend that served as a gathering point for everyone. Bloody Mary’s, Screwdrivers, Beer, Soft Drinks and munchies were also available.
At 5:00 PM we had cocktails in front of the Marina Office. Around 6:00 PM we served Brats cooked over the grill by “Chef” Deputy Fleet Captain, Jim McKinley.

Everyone supplied either an appetizer, beans, salad or a dessert. Sharon McKinley prepared onions for the brats. Beer and Wine, along with soft drinks and coffee were provided by the Committee. The weather Friday evening was outstanding.
At 9:00 AM we met at the Oasis Restaurant, which was a short walk from the Marina, for breakfast. The Oasis has been in business for over 25 years and is owned by two ladies that do an excellent job. After breakfast we took a short 200’ walk to the Fort Myers Historical Museum, where we were met by one of their Tour Guides for a walking tour of downtown Fort Myers. If you have never taken this tour and have lived here all your life you probably have no idea how much history there is right in downtown Fort Myers. We were shown where the original Fort stood, along with a mural of the downtown that is on the side of the federal building that no one sees. The mural is at least 50’ by 30’ and is made up of thousands of mosaic tiles. It depicts a scene of the Fort in the 1860’s.
At 5:00 PM we met for cocktails and dinner at the Morgan House, also a short walk from our boats. They gave us a private room at no extra charge. Thirty three of us attended dinner and after dinner we walked two blocks to the Florida Rep, where twenty nine of us watched a play called “Opus”. Saturday night was “Bike Night” in downtown Fort Myers, which added a new element to our weekend as we walked to the theater.
Fort Myers has accomplished a fantastic job of updating the entire downtown area with new streets, pavers, sidewalks, streetlights and painting of all of the buildings. The project was just completed and definitely added to a great weekend.
A big hand for our Assistant Cruise Leaders Carlos and Marta Perosio and to “Chef” Capt. Jim McKinley. Also, a big thank you to Deputy Fleet Captain Len Zych who helped me carry all of the supplies from our boat to the Marina Office. A big thanks to Lars Larsen for taking the pictures of our Cruise.
As an added touch Sunday morning “Chef” Jim McKinley and myself pumped out five boats. (“The Honey Wagon Crew”) How’s that for service?
Sincerely,
Frank and Bette O’Neal
Cruise Leaders
PS As relatively new members and first time Cruise Leaders we were impressed with the high caliber of members at the RPYC. Everyone was not only nice, but extremely helpful to the neophytes!
