Royal Adventures - Urban Farm Tour
|
On Wednesday March 17 30 Royal Adventurers went on an Urban Farm Tour organized by the Farm Extension service of the University of Florida. This turned out to be a unique experience. We visited an urban vegetable garden located within a mile of the R.P.Y.C. This garden supplies fresh produce for a family of 10.Next was a visit to a goat farm apty named "Shoestring Farm" in No. Fort Myers. Then on to a bee farm on Slater Road. This proved to be the most interesting stop. The owner gave a fascinating explanation and demonstration of what is involved in bee keeping and honey production. Samples of honey were given out at the conclusion of this visit. The Royal Adventurers had an added adventure here as our bus got hung up on a small ditch at the driveway entrance . In order to free the bus an immense recovery vehicle had to be called and the bus was winched free after an hour's delay. After a (late) lunch at the Buckingham civic center our next stop was at a small c itrus grove run by a retired university president and his wife, a former professor. Here we all received Florida lemons, larger than Californian lemons, sweeter and with more juice but not cosmetically as attractive. Finally we visited a rabbit farm which specializes in raising show and pet rabbits. There are 47 recognized breeds of such rabbits. Overall everyone agreed that this was an unique "farm" tour within the immediate environs of Fort Myers.
