On the morning of May 12th 24 members gathered at the entrance to South seas Plantation. From there we went by trolley and boarded the Lady Chadwick. The group enjoyed a pleasant cruise in ideal weather for just over 1 hour with a stop at Cabbage Key before docking at Useppa. During the cruise we were entertained with a commentary highlighting the features and history of the sound and islands.  Upon disembarking  a guide greeted us and outlined features of the island. She then led us along the pink path to the Collier Inn where we enjoyed an excellent lunch in the Baron Collier Room which had been reserved for our group. After lunch several of us spent time in the excellent Sumwalt Museum which traces the history of Useppa from prehistoric times. No doubt several of the visitors were surprised to learn that Useppa was used by the CIA as a training site for officers leading the Bay of Pigs invasion of Cuba in 1960. 2:00 PM saw us re boarding t he Lady Chadwick and bidding farewell to this unique island. By 3:15 PM we were back at South Seas where we picked up our cars for the return to the mainland. All in all this was a most enjoyable day's outing especially for our first time visitors to Useppa..
