Following a sumptuous breakfast buffet, RPYC members and guests were
presented with an overview of the latest guidelines for responding to
heart attacks, strokes, and other situations where first aid may be
necessary. Karen Prohaska, of the American Red Cross reviewed the
steps we should take when we encounter an emergency, or experience one
ourselves. She demonstrated the ease of use of a commonly available
defibrillator, and emphasized the value of having CPR training. She
also pointed out that once you call 911, you or another person should
stay on the line if possible, as you will be given detailed
instructions on what to do for the victim. It was a good opportunity
to point out that RPYC has a portable defibrillator located next to
the right hand elevator in the upstairs Atrium. There is also another
one available for cruise leaders to take on cruises.
